The Santarelli family has been in the wine business for many generations. In 1924 Berardino Santarelli set up the family business in piazza Capranica in Rome.
In 1955 his grandson Nino Santarelli opened a bottling cellar in via della Stazione Tuscolana and in 1968 he bought the Casale del Giglio property at Le Ferriere in the Agro Pontino, near the town of Latina which lies some thirty miles south of Rome.
In 1982 he had a brilliant idea, he invited a group of university researchers to join him in what become known as the Casale del Giglio experimental research project. The project was launched in 1985
